The paper market has become volatile

The price of each ream of offset paper in size 70×100 with a weight of 70 grams per square meter reached 2,900,000 tomans after a 300,000-toman increase within one week. The price of each ream of offset paper in size 60×90 with the same weight also rose by 200,000 tomans and was distributed in Zahir al-Islam at 2,600,000 tomans.

Today, December 8 (18 Azar), the price of each kilogram of glossy paper in sizes 70×100 and 60×90 with a weight of 90 gsm reached 139,000 tomans. Each kilogram of gray-back duplex cardboard in 70×100 size and 300 gsm was also offered at 78,000 tomans.

These price increases come amid widespread criticism from various consumer groups, including publishers, who have expressed concern over market instability and even reported halting the publication of new works.

Nader Ghadiani, director of Ghadiani Publishing House, told Tasnim: “We have not printed any new books for two months and have halted publishing. With such prices, books are becoming a luxury item, like gold.”

Kamran Sharafshahi, director of Tajalli-e Mehr Publishing and a poet, also announced a decision to stop publishing, emphasizing that under such conditions, publishing a book—or even buying one—has become extremely difficult.

Analysts cite various reasons for the market turbulence in recent months, including currency fluctuations, market reactions to government economic decisions, reduced supply, and a ten-month halt in foreign currency allocation.
