Business Adoption and Use of AI
In August 2023, the British Chamber of Commerce surveyed over 700 companies, mostly SMEs, to examine AI adoption and the reasons for using or not using AI. This research also highlighted perceptions, barriers, and opportunities related to AI.
Adoption Levels:

The research showed that AI usage is very low, indicating that companies may be missing innovation opportunities.

Nearly half of respondents (48%) had no plans to use AI, and 22% were not using AI yet but planned to do so in the future.

Customer-facing businesses, such as hospitality and retail, were less likely to use AI; 58% reported no plans for AI adoption.

Business-to-business companies, such as financial, legal, and marketing firms, were slightly more likely to use AI; only 39% reported no plans.

A quarter of respondents (26%) believed AI would reduce net employment in their sector, while 12% expected net job growth. Others either expected no change or had not yet decided.
Types of AI Technologies Used:
Among companies using AI, chatbots like ChatGPT were the most popular application (18% of all respondents), followed by data analytics with machine learning (6%). Other technologies included speech recognition and process automation.
Company Size Differences:
Companies with more than 50 employees were more likely to use AI; 24% used chatbots, and only 37% reported no plans for AI adoption.
Common AI Applications Among Users: Programming, data analysis, language translation, content creation, and idea review.
Barriers to AI Adoption:
