According to Sedaye Sama News Agency, citing the European Commission’s website, Eurostat data released on Tuesday showed that government debt in the euro area reached 88% of GDP by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

The report also indicated that the government debt ratio across the entire European Union increased to 82% of GDP during the same period.

EU member states have taken on significant financial commitments to address persistent economic pressures across Europe.

The report added that the euro area’s government budget deficit stood at 3% of GDP in the first quarter of 2026, while the overall EU deficit was slightly higher at 3.1% of GDP.

Eurozone governments generated €2.3 trillion in revenue during the period. However, public expenditures exceeded revenues, reaching €2.4 trillion.
