London Stock Market Declines as Britain’s New Cabinet Is Announced

According to Sedaye Sama News, citing Invezz, London’s stock market closed lower on Monday as investors cautiously assessed ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East alongside the appointment of Andy Burnham as the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister and the unveiling of his cabinet.

The FTSE 100 index fell 0.7%, marking its largest single-day decline in nearly two weeks. The FTSE 250 dropped 0.3%, while the Small Cap Index lost 0.2%.

Market sentiment remained cautious amid continued regional tensions and concerns over the stability of global energy markets.

Shortly after taking office, Prime Minister Burnham announced his new cabinet, combining experienced ministers from Keir Starmer’s government with several of his long-time political allies.

John Healey returned to government as Chancellor of the Exchequer (Finance Minister) less than two months after resigning as Defence Secretary over disagreements regarding defense spending. He now faces the challenge of addressing an estimated £5 billion gap in the UK’s defense budget.

Former Energy Secretary Ed Miliband was appointed Foreign Secretary and is expected to continue supporting Britain’s transition toward clean energy and net-zero emissions.

Shabana Mahmood retained her position as Home Secretary, remaining responsible for immigration, national security, and policing.

Meanwhile, Louise Haigh, one of Burnham’s closest political allies, was appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Deputy Prime Minister, and Cabinet Office Minister. She will oversee the newly established “Number 10 North” unit, created to promote regional development and greater devolution of powers across the UK.
