Europe’s Largest Banks Ranked
According to Sedaye Sama News Agency, BNP Paribas was established in 2000 through the merger of two major French banks, Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP) and Paribas. BlackRock and the Belgian government are minority shareholders in the bank.
With $3.2 trillion in assets, HSBC is the second-largest bank in Europe, headquartered in the United Kingdom, followed by France’s Crédit Agricole with $3.1 trillion in assets.
Santander ($2.2 trillion), Barclays ($2.07 trillion), BPCE Group ($1.98 trillion), Société Générale ($1.81 trillion), Deutsche Bank ($1.68 trillion), UBS Group ($1.61 trillion), and Crédit Mutuel Group ($1.44 trillion) complete the list of Europe’s top ten banks by total assets.
Traditional Banking Hubs
Although London and Zurich are among Europe’s best-known financial centers, France hosts half of the continent’s ten largest banks by assets, including Crédit Agricole, BPCE, Société Générale, and Crédit Mutuel.
London’s historic position as a leading European financial center has faced new challenges since the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union in 2020. HSBC and Barclays spent hundreds of millions of pounds adapting to Brexit. Other major British banks include Lloyds, NatWest Group, and Standard Chartered.
Germany’s Decentralized Banking System
Despite having Europe’s largest economy, Germany has only one bank among the continent’s top 20 by assets: Deutsche Bank, ranked eighth with $1.68 trillion in assets and listed on both the Frankfurt and New York stock exchanges.
Germany’s banking system is intentionally decentralized, relying on a three-pillar structure consisting of private commercial banks, regional public savings banks, and cooperative credit unions.
According to Visual Capitalist, Spain has three banks among Europe’s top 20: Santander ($2.3 trillion), BBVA ($1 trillion), and CaixaBank ($780 billion). All three have extensive retail banking operations, while Santander and BBVA maintain a significant international presence.
