US Job Opportunities Shrink, Raising Alarm Bells for the World’s Largest Economy

According to Sedaye Sama, citing the Associated Press, the US economy is facing a decline in job opportunities and increasingly difficult hiring conditions. The latest figures show that only 29,000 jobs were added in September, raising concerns about the outlook for the country’s labor market.

The US Department of Labor announced on Thursday that initial applications for unemployment benefits fell slightly to 197,000 from 199,000 the previous week.

The four-week average of initial unemployment claims, which smooths out weekly fluctuations, also declined by 2,500 to 198,000.

According to the department, the US economy added just 29,000 jobs in September, indicating a slowdown in hiring in the world’s largest economy.

At the same time, the number of initial unemployment claims stood at 197,000. This suggests that there is no widespread wave of layoffs, although the labor market continues to face challenges.

Experts distinguish between low levels of layoffs and increasingly difficult job-search conditions. Companies may retain their existing employees while refraining from hiring new workers.

This situation is particularly challenging for people who have lost their jobs and have been searching for new employment for an extended period, as fewer vacancies can increase the time needed to find work.

A slowdown in hiring may also affect household purchasing power and consumer confidence, especially if employment growth remains weak for an extended period.

According to the report, the US unemployment rate edged up to 4.2% last month.
