The snapback mechanism has been triggered

China and Russia’s draft resolution to postpone UN sanctions on Iran for six months in the Security Council was not approved, making the activation of the snapback and the reinstatement of sanctions inevitable.

With the failure of the China-Russia resolution in the UN Security Council, the snapback mechanism has been triggered, and UN sanctions against Iran will be reinstated starting tomorrow night, New York time.

According to EcoIran, at the decisive moment of activating the snapback and announcing the sanctions’ reinstatement, the proposed resolution by China and Russia to extend the snapback mechanism by six months did not pass, receiving 4 votes in favor, 2 abstentions, and 9 votes against. The nine negative votes versus four positive votes from China, Russia, Pakistan, and Algeria meant that a U.S. veto was not required.

Thus, the snapback has been finalized, and UN Security Council sanctions against Iran will officially come into effect on Sunday at 8:00 PM.

📣 The main sanctions that will be reimposed on Iran include the following resolutions:

UN Security Council Resolution 1696 (2006)
UN Security Council Resolution 1737 (2006)
UN Security Council Resolution 1747 (2007)
UN Security Council Resolution 1803 (2008)
UN Security Council Resolution 1929 (2010)
