Sand Battery: Finland’s Revolutionary Answer to the Biggest Renewable Energy Challenge

 

According to Sedaye Sama News, a small town in southern Finland has adopted the world’s largest commercial sand battery to address one of the greatest challenges facing renewable energy: intermittent power generation.

The massive facility, standing 13 meters tall and 15 meters wide, uses 2,000 tons of crushed soapstone to store clean energy as heat. It has a thermal storage capacity of 100 megawatt-hours, enough to supply heating for the 5,000 residents of Pornainen for nearly one month during summer or about one week in winter.

As reported by CNBC, the project was commissioned by the district heating company Loviisan Lämpö and developed by Polar Night Energy. Launched last year, the initiative aims to modernize heat production and reduce carbon emissions. Initial estimates indicate that the sand battery has reduced greenhouse gas emissions from the local heating network by nearly 70% while cutting wood-chip consumption by approximately 60%.

Tommi Eronen, CEO of Polar Night Energy, said: “We are moving from a world dominated by large power plants to one where wind and solar generate electricity. This transition requires enormous energy storage capacity. We hope that sand batteries will become a major part of that solution, as they do not require rare earth materials such as lithium used in conventional batteries.”

The technology works like a giant thermos filled with heat-storage material. During periods of abundant wind or solar electricity, the system uses low-cost power to heat the stones to very high temperatures. Well-insulated silos retain the heat for days or even weeks, releasing it through heat exchangers to warm water for the district heating network whenever needed.

Mikko Paananen, CEO of Loviisan Lämpö, explained: “The key advantage is that we can separate electricity purchasing from heat production. A single charge can provide district heating for a week in winter or up to a month in summer, allowing us to take full advantage of low electricity prices.”

Finland’s Minister for Climate, Sari Multala, described the Pornainen project as an inspiring and innovative solution to energy storage challenges. Although critics point to its lower energy density compared with chemical batteries, energy experts believe its reliance on abundant materials and its ability to store energy over long periods make the technology highly promising for global adoption.
