Iran’s Natural Gas Production Grew Twice as Fast as the Global Average Despite Peak Sanctions

According to Sedaye Sama News, the latest Statistical Review of World Energy published by the Energy Institute shows that Iran’s natural gas production reached 264.8 billion cubic meters (bcm) in 2025, marking a 1.3% increase compared with the previous year. Iran produced 262.2 bcm of natural gas in 2024.
Iran Ranked as the World’s Third-Largest Gas Producer
According to the report, Iran was the third-largest producer of natural gas in the world in 2025, accounting for 6.3% of global natural gas production.
The United States remained the world’s largest producer with 1,073 bcm, while Russia ranked second with 609 bcm. U.S. gas production increased by 4.3% during the year, whereas Russia’s production declined by 3%.
China ranked fourth with 264.1 bcm of natural gas production. China’s output has grown significantly in recent years, and it is expected to surpass Iran in the coming years.
Global natural gas production increased by 1.6% in 2025, reaching 4,196 bcm.
Iran’s Gas Production Growth Twice the Global Average
According to Eghtesad-e Moaser, over the ten-year period ending in 2025, Iran’s natural gas production recorded an average annual growth rate of 3.7%. Despite the country’s toughest sanctions during this period, Iran’s production growth was twice the global average.
Worldwide natural gas production grew by an average of 1.8% annually between 2015 and 2025.
Countries such as Qatar, despite possessing vast natural gas reserves, recorded only 0.4% production growth over the same period. Russia, previously the country with the world’s largest proven gas reserves after Iran, also registered only 0.4% growth in gas production.
